And yet, more than a blueprint for hiring talent, this looks like the Stanley-Cup-Survives-car-fire viral moment. Company responded because she sensed the opportunity for some free visibility (and goodwill). A paid internship isn't such a big price to pay.
Super interesting!! The high agency bit is really interesting to me. Maybe it's just anecdotally but my experience is that there are certain life-phases for when companies value high agency, and other phases of growth where that mindset can be detrimental ones career.
I know folks that work at Shopify, or have at one time. I don't think many of them would say that there is a culture of high agency at the company.
Still, this is pretty cool. Thanks for highlighting it.
Thank you for tagging me and asking!!! I think with any method it’s more about getting to the strategy behind why it worked to figure out what will work for you! My advice:
read the room, select a tactic appropriate for the company/hiring manager you’re looking to “court”
personal outreach (!!) along the way too many people decided to use the same templates for personal outreach and cover letters - meaning that everyone looks the same. doing something to stand out and show your genuine interest and why you’re a fit is great
and I generally agree with Peter Yang’s advice at the end
TFW you’re reading Carly and see your name 🖤
(By the way, I deleted all my tweets so the I guess original conversation is gone, glad you kept it filed!)

Thanks for sharing your insight! I have a post going up later today about my own job hunt challenges. The field is extremely competitive right now.
Interesting read! Curious if this only works for entry-level and internship roles.
